25C Federal Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Tax Credit

The Inflation Reduction Act modified the federal tax credit for homeowners who make energy improvements to their homes. In addition to extending the credit for ten years, it now provides a tax credit for homeowners who have energy audits conducted on their homes.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized RESNET® Raters as being able to conduct these energy audits. DOE has recognized the RESNET Certified Home Energy Rater program as “Energy Skilled” in the category of Home Energy Audit. The RESNET Certified Home Energy Rater program appears on the list of Qualified Certification Programs for home energy auditors that taxpayers can use to claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) for home energy audits, per criteria specified in Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 2023-59.
